| Practical applications to the wonders of math and science are offered to
fourth graders. Mathematical concepts are developed through critical
thinking, problem solving, and reasoning strategies. Lessons include
hands-on activities with manipulative, opportunities for sharing ideas
about problem solving, and a variety of enriching experiences that make
math challenging and fun. Emphasis is placed on extending multiplication
and division skills, expanding the understanding of fractions and
decimals and broadening competence of geometry, graphing, and

The study of science involves life science, physical science, and earth
science. Life science studies include cells and organisms, animal
characteristics and habitats, and endangered animals. In physical
science, students explore properties and changes in matter, electricity,
and magnetism. Earth science studies include the earth's water and
weather. Through cooperative learning groups and center activities,
students learn the skills of organization and observation. Through
investigation and experimentation, students involve the scientific
process.

The language arts program for the fourth grade uses a novel-based
approach to reading. Reading skills are incorporated in the novel study
along with an intense focus on targeted fourth grade skills. Reader's
Workshop is an independent opportunity to choose books based on a
student's reading level and interest. Quarterly book projects and oral
reports reflect the student's ability to manipulate both written and
spoken language. Accelerated Reader is used in conjunction with Readers
Workshop as a tool offered to the student for a comprehensive
self-check. In addition to reading, the language arts program includes
mechanics of the English language, along with the writing process
through Writers Workshop. The children are exposed to several different
writing styles, for example, classification, comparison, persuasive,
reports and biographies.
The social studies program concentrates on geographic regions of our
country and world. Active learning and discovery take place through
individual and class projects. Rights and duties of citizenship are
explored as one learns how important the individual is to the place in
which one lives, environmentally and as a member of the community. In
addition to competence in knowledge and comprehension, higher order
thinking skills are incorporated into classroom lessons and activities.
These skills include applying, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating.
