St. James students in grades one through five are given instruction in basic art, art appreciation and art history. Students create original finished products using many mediums (watercolor, chalk, clay) and complete hand-made projects with quality and longevity in mind. Emphasis is placed on the elements: line, design, and color.

The children are encouraged to search for art in nature and the environment, and to recognize the value of art in our daily lives. Aside from technique, they will be challenged to "think outside of the box" using art as a language of expression and visual learning. Art fosters improved spatial reasoning, visualization, fine motor skills development, and creative thinking. Most importantly, however, is the self-confidence that students develop through the St. James art program and seeing our world as a gift of the ultimate artist creator, our Lord.
