Music education is important in the total development of children and music is an integral part of the students' education at St. James Episcopal Day School.  Our music program focuses on an appreciation of music through singing, movement, listening and other means of creative expression.

Children in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade participate weekly in our music classroom known as “Music Street”.

“Music Street” provides our children the opportunity to learn to sing together as a group and to perform for others. Every grade participates in a performance of some type during the school year. Basic music theory concepts are introduced to the youngest children and that foundation is built upon as students progress through our music curriculum. Younger students begin with simple music concepts such as high/low and fast/slow. Older students progress to analyzing simple music and composing four-measure melodies. These concepts are reinforced through musical games, listening exercises and hands-on learning tools such as rhythm instruments and melody bells.

Major composers and their music are introduced as we explore their place in the musical history timeline. Children are exposed to a wide range of vocal and instrumental music. These include classical and baroque music as well as scores from musical theatre and popular music.

Overall, the time your child spends on “Music Street” provides him with a wonderful opportunity for self expression and a feeling of self worth. Through a positive experience in music at St. James, our students will recognize that music is a gift from God that he will have the confidence to share with others during his life.
